The Red Wing Motor Co. Brass Water Pump
Many people have asked when we would have a scale piece of equipment that could be operated by a Red Wing or other small scale engine. They wanted it to really do something. They wanted it to be easy to build. And some wanted to be able to make it on miniature machine equipment like Sherline. This is what we came up with.
After a little thought and a little effort, we have designed a nice, functional water pump. It can be used at shows to pump water while in a bucket or on your front porch while relaxing. It will pump about 6 oz of water per stroke.
The handle is made of Oak. The internal piston and rod bushing are made from Delrin. The rest of the pump is made from Brass. The base for the pump can be made from Brass or Aluminum. I used Aluminum because it is cheaper and has nothing to do with the function of the pump.
Every piece of the pump with the exception of the 1” x 13” tube was machined on a Sherline 5400 mill and a Sherline 4400 lathe. I love my miniature machining equipment and use it instead of the larger equipment anytime I can. I could have parted the long tubing on the Sherline to get clean ends if I would have installed the steady rest. Since that was the only work to be done on the tubing I just used the big lathe.
